What I Learned At
Bachelor of Arts (Film & Digital Media with Economics)
I completed this 4-year degree last year and I have to say it taught me a lot about a lot of different things. The primary focuses were of course Film, Digital Media and Economics, however, there were some other modules involved such as Creative Programming, and Journalism that definitely helped expand my ability to think and reason as a creative.
Over the course of the degree we got to become acquainted with technology like:
- Adobe Illustrator
- After Effects
- Adobe XD
- Premiere Pro
- HTML
- CSS
- Javascript
- P5.js
Along with picking up those aforementioned practical skills a lot of our curriculum also had us understand the reasons as to why we were doing what we were doing. We picked apart films and designs and submitted academic essays on our findings which helped us make not just nice-looking art pieces but intentional ones.
When 3rd year came around we were given the opportunity to gain some experience. I did my work placement in Tribes Press which was a great experience for me because there wasn’t as much hand-holding as I had anticipated. As such I had no choice but to use my intuition a lot. I also had to learn how to present my work in a way that communicated its value with the end goal of it being published on the company’s social media and/or website.
Some of the work produced during that time included the following:
The Economics courses helped develop my business thinking in many different ways. For example, growing an understanding of how banking systems work, and how they relate to the public and government. Or different philosophies of thinking regarding the distribution of society’s resources. We also got to work with software like Stata, and Excel, and delve deep into some mathematical tools to help solve economic/business problems.
